Mike Quinn Studios · Independent community preview · Version 0.1.1

Keep your pen.
Move your windows.

Why I made this

When Wacom stopped supporting my trusty tablet in its newer drivers, I didn’t want to throw it away and spend hundreds on a new one. So I created this little helper to keep it going.

It’s working great for me now, and I’m sharing it in case it helps someone else keep a perfectly useful tablet out of the bin.

— Mike Quinn

A small helper for a specific Wacom problem: the pen works, but dragging an ordinary window by its top title bar does not.

Experimental software. Use at your own risk.

This is an independent project, not made or supported by Wacom or Apple. It is not Apple-notarised and has been physically tested on one Mac and one tablet. Read the compatibility notes and disclaimer before installing.

Check your setup

Your pen needs to move and click correctly before this helper can help.

DriverTested with Wacom 6.4.9-2 / 6.4.9f2.

Wacom lists driver 6.4.9-2 for macOS 12–15. Using it on macOS 27 is an unsupported workaround, not official compatibility. Read Wacom’s release notes.

The helper does not repair a missing tablet, pen pressure, text selection, file dragging or touch gestures. Keep a mouse or trackpad available while testing.

Setup & help

The complete Help.html guide is included in the ZIP. Keep it handy for setup and troubleshooting.

1. Check the Wacom driver

6.4.9-2 is the version used in the successful PTH-851 test. Do not downgrade an otherwise working setup just to try this helper.

Download 6.4.9-2 directly from Wacom

  1. If changing drivers, back up your Wacom settings and save open work first.
  2. Disconnect the tablet, uninstall the existing driver with Wacom Tablet Utility, then restart. Follow Wacom’s removal and reinstallation guide.
  3. Install the official driver, complete its permission prompts, restart and reconnect the tablet.
  4. Test pointer movement, clicking, text selection and file dragging before trying the helper.

If these functions do not work, resolve the driver issue first. This helper does not replace the Wacom driver.

2. Install and enable the helper
  1. Unzip the package and read Help.html and Disclaimer.txt.
  2. Drag Wacom Window Drag Helper.app into Applications, or your home folder’s Applications folder. Run that copy, outside iCloud Drive.
  3. Open the app. It starts paused.
  4. Click Open permission settings…. In System Settings → Privacy & Security, enable the helper under Device Control and Data Access / Accessibility. Approve any password or Touch ID prompt on your own Mac.
  5. Return to the helper and click Enable window dragging. Granting permission alone does not enable it.
  6. Try dragging a blank part of a Finder window’s top title bar with the pen.

This permission gives broad control capability. Grant access only to a copy you trust. Driver permissions are separate: consult the included guide.

If macOS cannot verify the developer

This release is ad-hoc signed, not Developer ID signed or Apple-notarised. The first-open experience from an internet download has not yet been tested on another Mac.

Only if you trust this exact download, try opening the installed app once. Then check System Settings → Privacy & Security for Open Anyway for this app and confirm the prompt yourself. Apple explains the available choices.

If macOS says it is damaged, will harm your computer, or offers no approval option, stop. Do not disable Gatekeeper, SIP or other system-wide protections, and do not remove quarantine flags with Terminal commands.

Everyday use and known limits

Keep the app running. Yellow minimises; red quits. You can also use Pen Drag in the menu bar to pause, show or quit it. After restarting your Mac, reopen the helper and enable it again; it does not run at login.

The helper’s own window can feel sluggish to drag. Ordinary Finder windows worked in the physical test. Custom title bars, full-screen windows, buttons, tabs, text fields, window edges, double-clicks and modified clicks may be ignored.

This does not turn finger touch on or off or fix the legacy Wacom settings panel. Drawing apps, pressure, sleep/wake, multiple monitors and other configurations have not all been regression-tested.

Troubleshooting, privacy and removal

Nothing moves? Check that the helper says Enabled, try a plain Finder title bar, and release modifier keys. If permission is missing, check that you are running the installed copy; quit and reopen it after granting permission.

If replacing the app invalidates its permission, remove and re-add only Wacom Window Drag Helper in the control-access list. Leave other apps’ and the driver’s permissions alone.

Unexpected behaviour? Pause or quit the helper and use your mouse or trackpad. Save your work before retesting.

The helper has no network communication or automatic updater. Its local diagnostic file contains counts, accessibility roles, permission state and timestamps—not document text, window titles, typed text or screenshots. Nothing is uploaded by the helper. External web links and the website’s comments service are separate.

To remove it: quit the helper, revoke its control-access permission and move the app to the Bin. Removing it does not remove or change your Wacom driver.
